Call to Worship – Psalm 111:1-10

ALL PRESENT READ:

1 Praise the Lord!
I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart,
in the company of the upright, in the congregation.
2 Great are the works of the Lord,
studied by all who delight in them.
3 Full of splendor and majesty is his work,
and his righteousness endures forever.
4 He has caused his wondrous works to be remembered;
the Lord is gracious and merciful.
5 He provides food for those who fear him;
he remembers his covenant forever.
6 He has shown his people the power of his works,
in giving them the inheritance of the nations.
7 The works of his hands are faithful and just;
all his precepts are trustworthy;
8 they are established forever and ever,
to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness.
9 He sent redemption to his people;
he has commanded his covenant forever.
Holy and awesome is his name!
10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
all those who practice it have a good understanding.
His praise endures forever!

Hymn of Adoration - Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise

  1. Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
    In light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
    Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
    Almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise.

  2. Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
    Nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might;
    Thy justice like mountains high soaring above
    Thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love.

  3. To all life Thou givest, to both great and small
    In all life thou givest, the true life of all
    We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree
    And wither and perish, but not changest Thee.

  4. Great Father of glory, pure Father of light,
    Thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight;
    All praise we would render; O help us to see
    'Tis only the splendor of light hideth thee!

Prayer of Confession

One prays:

O wise and all-knowing God,
we humbly confess our sins to you.
We confess that we have looked to our own wisdom instead of yours.
We have trusted in the words of man over the Word of God.
We have done foolish things that dishonor You and grieve Your Holy Spirit.
We turn from this sin and look to Your Son, Jesus Christ,
who lived in perfect obedience to His Father,
who taught the wise ways of His Kingdom,
who bore the weight of our sin on the cross,
who rose again to give us true life in Him.
We worship him together now.
Amen.

Assurance of Faith – Hebrews 12:1-2

ONE READS ALOUD:

1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Hymn of Assurance – The Solid Rock

  1. My hope is built on nothing less
    Than Jesus’s blood and righteousness.
    I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
    But wholly trust in Jesus’s Name.

    On Christ the solid Rock I stand,
    All other ground is sinking sand;
    All other ground is sinking sand.

  2. When darkness veils His lovely face,
    I rest on His unchanging grace.
    In every high and stormy gale,
    My anchor holds within the veil.

  3. His oath, His covenant, His blood,
    Support me in the whelming flood.
    When all around my soul gives way,
    He then is all my Hope and Stay.

    On Christ the solid Rock I stand,
    All other ground is sinking sand;
    All other ground is sinking sand.

  4. When He shall come with trumpet sound,
    Oh may I then in Him be found.
    Dressed in His righteousness alone,
    Faultless to stand before the throne.

    On Christ the solid Rock I stand,
    All other ground is sinking sand;
    All other ground is sinking sand.

Teaching - Ecclesiastes 2:12-17

12 So I turned to consider wisdom and madness and folly. For what can the man do who comes after the king? Only what has already been done. 13 Then I saw that there is more gain in wisdom than in folly, as there is more gain in light than in darkness. 14 The wise person has his eyes in his head, but the fool walks in darkness. And yet I perceived that the same event happens to all of them. 15 Then I said in my heart, “What happens to the fool will happen to me also. Why then have I been so very wise?” And I said in my heart that this also is vanity. 16 For of the wise as of the fool there is no enduring remembrance, seeing that in the days to come all will have been long forgotten. How the wise dies just like the fool! 17 So I hated life, because what is done under the sun was grievous to me, for all is vanity and a striving after wind.
